If the brakes are ABS ('88 models varied: if there are a numer of wiring connectors on and around the brake fluid reservoir it's ABS) a hard pedal after repeated use of the brakes indicates that the ABS system can't maintain pressure in the hydraulic system. There are several possible causes for this:
1. brake fluid level is very low. Check and fill to the line on the reservoir.
2. The pressure accumulater has an internal leak. Turn the ignition on but don't start the engine, listen for a buzzing sound near the brake master cylinder; that's the ABS pump pressuring the system. Wait for the brake fluid light to go out and the buzzing to stop. Press and release the brake pedal hard and quickly counting each application until the brake fluid light comes on. It should take 10 to 15 applications. If it's less than 8 there is an issue with the accumulator which will need replacing. After you stop pumping the brake pedel listen for the buzz from the ABS pump: how long does it take for the light to go back off? seconds? minutes? never? leading to #3.
3. The ABS pump is on the way out; What does the ABS pump noise sound like? Open the hood and listen closely for the pump noise. You may need to pump the brakes again to get it to come on. It's located under brake master cylinder; a cylider mounted transversely, just behing the alternator pulley. the noise should be a smooth hum or a soft buzzing noise, if it sounds rattlely or intermittant the pump is dying.
