Since I don't know what you're experience level is, forgive me but I have to ask: are you sure you're looking at the spark plugs and not the fuel injectors? If your engine is the 8-valve variety the plugs are on the R/H side of the engine and are kind of 'under' the cylinder head (as the engine is slanted) and not so easy to reach or see. On a 16-valve motor they're in the center top of the cylinder head, but are hidden under a cover held on by two screws.
The fuel injectors, on the other hand, are right on top and are easy to see and reach. The injectors on a EFI motor ('85-on Turbo and '86-on NA) are generally able to move a little, and make a ticking/clicking noise when operating normally.
Also, if you put your hand on the spark plug with the engine running you're likely to get a shock that'll certainly get your attention, and if you were able to make it contact the piston by pushing on it that would be very bad, and would probably make a pretty dramatic noise.
