emissions - charcoal can.

OK, the '86 SPG didn't pass the NOX test in northern VA. More than twice as high as allowed. I checked all the vacuum hoses this morning with a guage and got good pressure everywhere. I am off to buy a timing light now.
I asssume if I can line up the "0" with the hash mark that I am at 16 degrees BTDC. But which way do I go to "retard" the timing by 2 degrees?
Finally, I discovered that the big hose from the charcoal canister is not hooked to anything. The diagram on the car fender looks like it is supposed to go into the throttle body, but there is no open or capped hole! The small hose looks OK - attached to the top of the trottle body. This is a vacuum powered canister, not electric. Could that be causing my NOX problems?
I have tried to compare the lines to my '91 turbo, but the plumbing is quite different, so that is no help.
Once I get this right I am going to draft a nice diagram and post it. Need help now though. Thanks, Doug
