The way I check tire rod and ball joints is to jack up the car. Take the tire in you hands (one at 3:00 and other at 9:00) and try to turn it left or right. You can feel slop if it is bad. To check the ball joints. With the car still up take a bar (like a crow bar) and place the non-hook end under the wheel. Pry up on the wheel with your other hand at the 12:00. You should be able to feel slop up and down if they are bad. If you feel slop no mater how you push on the wheel it is a wheel bearing (This will not always show a bad wheel bearing). Someone might have a better why to check this but this is how the State of Maine does it State Inspection. Hope this helps.
