When the upper chain guide is old and hardened, it does quite down after the car warms up.
R&R for the valve cover is pretty much like Bentley describes it. But, if the gasket is old and hardened, you definitely want to replace it because it won't reseal satisfactorily.
When I did the valve cover gasket in my '89, I had a heck of a time getting the gaskets to stay in place when I flipped it over to install it. Some gasket shellac took care of that problem. Don't use silicone to seal the spots that the manual shows - use something like Loctite 518. It's a bit pricey, but worth it, and it doesn't flake off and cause problems down the line.
