There's no problem with *relocating* the AMM, though. You can put it wherever you want to, as long as all the air that flows through it now (which by the way, is 100% of the combustible air that ultimately goes through the intake valves) goes through it in its new location.
As far as AMM failures go, I don't know, really. Hard starting and hunting at idle (fluctuating RPMs) are signs, as well as failure to run at all. If the little wire (filament) inside breaks it won't work. One test on LH2.2 systems (but by no means the only one) is to measure the resistance across pins 3 and 6 - should nominally be 380 ohms but may be adjusted (via the adjustment screw under the plug) to enrich/lean the basic fuel injection setting.
