Quirky electrical problem

An odd electrical fault has developed on my '88 900i.
It first manifested the other night when I arrived home and switched off the ignition, except the engine did not stop and the lights remained on, when I took my foot off the brake then it stopped.
On investigation I find, with the ignition off, when I depress the brake pedal the ignition/alternator lights illuminate briefly before going out, the parking brake and brake warning lights dimly illuminate before a relay
clicks, then these warning lights brighten and the headlamps illuminate and the fuel pump spins up.
I investigated the front crossmember earth, a number of the wires disintegrated as I removed the bolt and I had to replace a connector. I cleaned all the very corroded terminals. This had no effect on the problem but now the lights are loads brighter and the engine is running smoother than ever. :-)
I had a look at the left hand rear light cluster. A previous owner has added a suplementary earth and smeared the connectors with grease. I cleaned up the connectors and the supplementary earthing terminal - no improvement.
Tomorrow I'm going to have a look for the earthing point under the left hand speaker, if I can find my torx bits :-) Are there any other earthing points I should be looking for, or am I barking up the wrong tree?
Any ideas anyone?
Cheers all
Sam
