Okay, I won't say how much, but I've got a new Saab in my shed, so I guess I need a new screen name to match. You-all have gotten used to my long, long, long posts, so here's another! I'd appreciate feedback on the questions below.
She's a blue 1992 S convertible. 110k. Mmmm, blue. Too bad it's metallic. Admiral Blue is so pretty.
I have questions, queries, posers...
What's broken-
Stitching in driver's seat (simple fix)
Central locks (simple fix)
Three unique lock cylinders (fairly simple fix)
Headlight wipers are probably original (Thppppt!)
Small dings and such (I work in doll-up, simple fix)
Seat heaters (simple fix)
Needs a full tune up (simple fix)
Tires are bald and sucked anyway (simple and kinda expensive fix)
Driver's door handle must be loose from body in order to open the door (simple fix a la junkyard) (power windows just get in the way)
AC (Duh!) (Convertibles need this??????) (Already ripped it out of the '88)
One horn button (simple fix)
What's just been fixed:
Oil pump, seal, and harmonic balancer
60k mile GM 457 12 box just put in
Clutch (throwout bearing siezed at 80k)
Water pump and head gasket (2.1L NA.... important!)
Ball joints, tie rod ends, NONE rusted!
The top (power actuation)
New, crappy exhaust and brake pads
New vacuum lines and bushings and nipples (plastic and rubber breaking down)
What's worrying me:
2.1L motor (I already change my coolant yearly in the '88 8 valver)
It's got gadgets. Lots of 'em: Power top (previously mentioned), power windows, power mirrors, central locks, headlight wipers, power seats, why, why, why? I have no experience with these.
PS rack so soon?
Important questions:
1. Did the S convertibles have Saab-guard?
2. What does one do to keep the top in good shape?
3. Any extra suceptibility to theft?
4. I am unfamiliar with Saab's power windows, mirrors, seats, and the entire convertible deal. What do I do to keep these things working? The seat will probably be left in one place all the time. It's also been about eight months since I adjusted the mirrors in my '88.
5. How does that back sead lower cushion come out of there? Bentley's bolts are missing/obscured/not there.
6. Aside from the head gaskent and pitting of the cylinder head cooling surfaces, what are the other problems with the 2.1L (B212) engine? Is it a good, durable motor like my 8 valver, or will the lifters and such die early?
7. ABS- I bleed the whole thing every other year, with the clutch yearly, anything else I can do to prolong the life of the accumulator and solenoid and such?
8. Any creative ways to keep bird doo out of the inside?
9. Did the fuel tank really go from 16.6 to 18 gallons during MY 1990?
10. Fuel mileage numbers anyone? I care.
11. Later-style fuel pump- reliable?
I've always wanted a Saab with a sunroof (like our '85).
I'm tall and will occasionally have to lean over to see a traffic light. Plus, the engineers like it when you wave at them.
