I replaced the O2 sensor with a Universal in my '89 a few years ago. One thing that I found with the splice is that, if you can get a good crimp splice and cover it with a good-quality heat-shrink tubing (something that has a gooey water barrier on the inside) it will last for years without giving you problems.
I think that Bill is right on as far as the reason you're seeing good boost. 3/4 to the red is what I've seen in unmodified APC boxes.
