Could be heat building up resistance as current flow is retricted by corroded connections in circuit or alternator issue(guess).
Clean all battery connections and grounds to shiny bright...radiator crossmember, trans case, and don't forget short black wire from alternator to block.
Then pull the plugs off the headlights and clean the spade connectors and the plug slots. Frequent cause of dim lights on 85's...connectors can melt if contacts are dirty.
If that doesn't fix the problem or you've done all that stuff already, you might have a bad alternator or voltage regulator. First check the regulator on the back of the alternator(towards front of car). It is screwed on with two phillips screws. One is easy to get and the other requires an angle screwdriver. If you don't have an angle screwdriver or the screw is stuck, remove it with a needlenose vice grips. Once you have the regulator out, note the two carbon sticks/brushes. They should be at least 5mm long. If not, replace regulator. Site sponsors like sobstory have them for low $$. If this is the problem, when you put in the new regulator, use small hex head bolts instead of the phillips screws for next time.
Finally if your regulator checks out Ok, you might have burned out a few diodes in the alternator. I'm not sure if this could cause the problem, but if a few diodes are burned out, an alternator may still charge, but you might notice the warning light not going out immediately after the car has not been run in a few days. High RPM symptoms are a purely a guess with this issue.
