Erratic High Oil Pressure

After years of steady, normal oil pressure, the VDO gauge in my '90 SPG(100K) has begun to show pressures off the scale (6-7 Bar) at RPM's over about 3000. When this is happening the needle bounces rapidly. As the RPM's fall below 3000, the needle resumes its steady 4.5 bar reading.
Normal hot pressures with 20/50 have been 1.5 bar at idle, and about 4.5 bar at cruising speeds.
This car gets frequent oil changes and the oil galleys in the head are immaculate, no varnish or gunk at all. I find it hard to believe that that the oil pressure relief valve could be sticking.
But I guess it has to be either that or a failing sender unit.
I don't have a manual o/p gauge to swap-in, and I really don't want to spend $50 on a new sender, just to check. So, I'm most concerned about the possibility that the relief valve could stick OPEN, and lose all oil pressure.
Anyone have any similar experiences or informed thoughts on this problem?
Thanx, Mike
