When I'm trying to decide whether or not to sink a certain sum into a car, I think about what I'll have if I do (a nice car with a brand new trans, w/warranty?) vs. what else I could get for the same money (plus whatever I can sell the broken car for). Which way are you better off? Do you want to go through the anguish of finding another car, then dealing with the unknown?

You didn't say what you spent on this car, which is good because it's not relevant any more. Whether you got a good deal or not back then, that money's gone and you're not getting it back (unless there was a guarantee), especially now that this car's got wrecked trans. It's not part of the equation anymore.

It's also not really relevant to talk about what this car is 'worth' if you fix it. Not just because 'worth' is hard to define (worth to you, worth on the open market, etc), but because you'd probably only be only be thinking about fixing it if you're planning on keeping it. If you're gonna keep it, 'worth' as a dollar amount is not so important.

One exception to that last statement, and one that's burned me in the past: if you sink money into an older car then someone 'buys' it from you against your will by totalling it for you, you're not likely to get your investment back, owing to insurance company swindlers - I mean 'adjusters'. Ironically, I had an experience like this a couple years ago with my mom's '85 900S, when someone hit her right after we put in a brand new auto-box.
