I guess technically it's a crankshaft position sensor. But lots of people call it a Hall sensor.
Beginning in '98 for non-turbos, that sensor isn't located in the distributor. Like Lars says, it's down at the crankshaft pulley, & the distributor is empty.
The wire for this sensor runs alongside the block, over towards the throttle body. Look for breaks or worn-thru insulation. If that wiring shorts to ground, it won't fire the spark plugs.
Since it works when it's cold, but quits when it gets hot, that's almost classic for the sensor itself failing. You gotta take off the crankshaft pulley in order to see the sensor underneath the pulley.
