I know this post may be too late to help JLowe but maybe it will help someone else.
I too have experienced a clunking sound from the front end but on the drivers side. I have verified that it is definitely the spring perch gone bad in my case. For me the sound happens when I back out of a parking spot and turn the wheel, particularly to the right. I had someone eyeball the spring as I backed up and sure enough it popped over and over again.
The spring perch is designed to pivot on the bottom as the control arm travels through its range of motion so that the spring is kept straight as it compresses. I'm not sure exactaly what it is about the perch that causes the spring to pop or reseat itself but for now I've learned to live with it.
Also, I thought it might be some play in the suspension since it detects rearward motion and adjusts itself by popping. I just had all eight suspension bushings replaced but the popping is still there but greatly diminished. I don't know the why but at least I know the what.
The only other thing I think it may be is the motor mount but that has a different feel all together.
Good luck!
