I had a similar problem. Had to retard timing about 1-2 degrees. The problem came on all of a sudden and I traced it to a low compression in #2 cylinder. All the others were at 150 psi and the bad one was 100 psi. I removed the head and was looking for an obvious gasket problem, but didn't find anything. After staring at the block, head and gasket for two days....i found the problem. The head was cracked between two valves. I didn't have coolant in the oil, or oil in the coolant, just lots of blow-by into the crankcase. Removing the dipstick showed lots of pressure. A hyead replacement solved the problem and the motor is running good again.
