Hi all.
I have an '86 Saab 900S (16v auto trans.) that has been having quite a bit of front end clunking for a while.
For a while I was having a clunk only on acceleration. I discovered that all 3 studs in my exhaust pipe were "gone" when my car started to sound like an airplane. So after I put some new ones in it seemed that the clunk went away.
Now it's back but instead what I have is a clunk with hesitation upon moderate to heavy acceleration from a dead stop. If I suddenly take my foot off the gas in city traffic, I also get a clunk. If I very gently accelerate I have neither hesitation nor clunking. The day this problem became really un-ignorable I noticed for the first time that idle in "drive" would choke-up and sputter intermittently as well.
I'm afraid a motor mount is toast because not only did the 3 bolts in the exhaust pipe disappear, but both cross member like bands under the trans-axle (oriented front to rear and visible, though un-named in the crappy Haynes guide) are hanging off as well. You can see them hanging down (front bolts are in, but both rear are missing) Maybe I've been subjecting the peripheral components to tweaking upon each acceleration? I don' t know.
So the car's off the road and it's recently been one thing after another from my beloved 900. (crank-shaft pulley, alternator, emergency brakes, auto trans cooling lines (very freaking expensive pieces of 11" hose) )
I checked the fluid level on the trans-axle and it's fine. I do get a tin-can clanky sound from the right front wheel on u-turns, though a very Saab savvy shop in Berkely, CA said the CV joints were OK.
Other than that, I can't think of any other info that might be usefull.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.
Sincere thanks to all.
