Here's the deal. Bought a 93 Turbo convert. manual 5spd. Had it checked out by a local Saab specialist before I bought it. He was recommended by several people. He said it was in great shape, had minor things to fix to the tune of ~$500 to fix.
The car has 95K, and had the 95K service done by this specialist, and they notice the shifter block needs replacing. They missed this on the initial inspection. I opt not to replace it yet. On a road trip to the beach, the shifter won't go into 5th, so take it to a dealership there, and they replace the shifter block.
On the way back from the beach, the car won't go into first gear. I figure the beach dealer f'd up the installation of the shifter block, take the car back to my local guy, he investigates, and finds that the guy I bought it from had rigged a piece of sheet metal to keep the shifter in 1st gear, since it ends up the transmission is shot. The mechanic says that it was pretty ingenious way to fool us into thinking the trans was OK. Somehow when the new shifter block was installed, it made the shifter pop out of first--the sheet metal rigging was no longer working.
Anyway, I got ripped off, and am now faced with having to get a new transmission. The mechanic says that while the engine is out to fix the trans, might as well replace the head gasket, etc. etc. He wants $2500 for the new trans, and I only paid $4500 for the whole car.
Anyway, looking for some advice as to what to do. I love the car, it's perfect for my needs, but don't want it to become a huge money pit. A little bit of a money pit was expected when I bought it.
THanks for listening.
