Knock sensor symptoms w/o the CEL?

A few weeks ago I started getting the 4-flash CEL signalling knock sensor problems. The car would run normally up to the point where the CEL would first get thrown, then it would get reduced power & sound "raspy" as the ECU changed things (retarded the timing?) I pulled the connector from the knock sensor (at the engine block) & cleaned the spring contacts with emery paper, then I sprayed both the spring contacts & the plug on the sensor with electrical parts cleaner & let everything air dry. That stopped the CEL flashes.
However, it's now weeks later & I'm still getting the "raspy" engine noise when I get in the 3,000-3,500 (& above) rpm range. Along with that, I seem to hit a flat spot in the rpms at around 3,500 that feels similar to the reduced power I was getting when the CELs would trip. Gas mileage is also down (from low/mid 30's to mid/upper 20's), although I know that's never a definitive sign of a single particular problem.
As a test, I unplugged the knock sensor & drove around a bit. I got the same symptoms I had a few weeks ago & the 4-flash CELs came back. When I plugged it back in, the symptoms are nearly identical but w/o the CELs.
Is it possible to have a bad knock sensor w/o throwing CELs? Or is it probably something else?
