With some aussie 7" wide alloy 9000 rims I fit 205/55/15s to my 90 900S and the front tires stick out past the arches and ya end up with a nice spray down the doors when you go thru a puddle, but there's no rubbing. Wider tires MIGHT fit but I haven't bothered to try since I'd need to go to something like 225/50s to keep the inflated tire diameters close to stock and what the speedo is calibrated for.
Total infalted diameter is based on the wheel diameter (in millimeters, so inches x 25.4) plus the tire casing height, which is the tread width times the aspect ratio (which is a percentage of the width, so 65 aspect is 65 percent or 0.65) times 2 (upper and lower casing).
So for a 185/65-15, you get (15 x 25.4)+((185 * .65)*2) which is 381mm + 240.5mm for a total of 621.5mm. If the rim diameter is the same, you just need to calculate the tire casing height part of the comparisons.
A 195/60 is 234mm, 205/55 is 225.5, 175/70 (which is often listed as the snow tire size on many early 80s 900 manuals) is 245mm. Now my 900 came stock with the 195/60s, so going down 8.5mm in height isn't really that major.
