The instrument panel is illuminated by light transmitted by GREEN lucite
"Light Pipes", similar to fiber optics.
Using any color LED other than white or green will result in severe loss of intensity at the distal end. Attempting to use colors on the red end of the spectrum (red, orange, yellow) will cause the greatest loss, green or blue, less. White is probably the best.
Be sure to clean of the end of the "light pipe" with a Q-Tip wet with Windex/alcohol, they tend to get dusty/dirty and block some light.
I think that a multi-LED replacement bulb (3 or 4 led's) will be necessary to prduce enough light to make an improvement.
Keep us posted on your results.
