If the battery is old, it's a possibility that he pushed it over the edge. BTDT.
Of course, in order to be able to run the car after the battery has been discharged, it really needs to be put on a charger overnight to get enough of a charge to be able to supply the needs of the car. When there's just a surface charge, the battery demand tends to overwhelm the demands of the rest of the car. The fuel injection control computer (ECU) needs a minimum voltage, the number escapes me right now, in order keep the car running.
You may want to slap it on a charger to see if the battery needs to be replaced.
If the car has its original alternator and has over 150k miles, it's a good bet that the brushes on the voltage regulator need to be replaced.
