I was leaking coolant all over the throttle pedal. Opened the speaker cover and could see the coolant coming up through the top of the valve. I found out from the BB and other people that there's a little O-ring that breaks.
I was told that it is possible to replace the o-ring and have the valve work properly again. I figured I give it a try. To be on the safe side I got a used working one from a friend as a backup in case it didn't work.
i took the valve out using a long handled hex driver with the rounded end so I could work at angles. I didn't bother with the knee bolster or anything. Just the speaker cover, sound insulation and floor vent moved to the side. This is less work but you spend a lot of time on your back. I took the drivers seat out to make more room (only 2 bolts on my 83 n/a).
So I went about replacing the o-ring. I pulled the valve apart just because I'm curious and like to know how things work. Anyway, got the broken o-ring out with a dental pick. And got the new one in with litium grease and LOTS of patience. Felt good moving the control as it was nice and tight (this was actually not good as I found out)
Re-installed the valve. Had heat and everything. After driving for awhile I started getting coolant on my shoe again, crap. Did the whole thing again. Turns out the o-ring was not seated properly. It got pushed out of position when I insterted the rod. This time I sanded the leading edge of the rod. REintalled and everything works.
Went to return the used valve to my friend, turns out some other guy(idiot) decided it was junk and threw it out. I was borrowing the garage.
That's my story.
