Well .... it depends Posted by RS [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Re: inner tripod/driver joint PLEASE HELP, Reid Peterson, Thu, 18 Nov 2004 13:39:04 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
If the tripod bearing has disintegrated but left the contact surfaces of the driver unscathed (it's a longshot, but worth talking about) you could just replace the tripod bearing. The tripod contact balls are made of harder material than the driver contact surfaces, so they usually out wear the drivers unless the needle bearings dry out and perish.
Usually what happens is that the contact surfaces in the drivers get a wear spot that causes the vibration. If you're lucky and have a 5-speed, you can swap them right side to left side because decelerating side of the driver doesn't get much force appled to it compared to the accelerating side. If it's been done once, you'll want to replace both of them. If it's an automatic, both the accelerating side and the deceleration side of the drivers gets worn.
That might not be entirely coherent'cause it's too late and I should have been asleep an hour ago. But ... since you used the word "beer", that reminded me that there's one left in the fridge ... for a few minutes, anyway.
Cheers
