Like MS suggested, it's possible that the lube in the gearset has dried out over the years and has gotten gummy or there might be lint or othr stuff in the gear teeth.
One possible solution involves pulling the gearshiift lever and undoing the three-sided nuts to remove the shifter assembly. You'll want to remove the shift lever so that, when you remove the shifter assembly, you don't twist the rubber shift coupler.
You can lift up the shifter assembly to access the gears. You can lube the gear pivot points where the gear shafts go through the shifter assembly with something like Triflow or Super Lube. It might be worthwhile to pull out your new cylinder and lube the gear pivot point from the inside.
When the lock cylinder on one of my 900s died, I also took the plate on the bottom of the shifter assembly off so I could access the gearset from the inside.
Then, there's always the possibility that the switch itself is going bad. But deal with that if lubing the gear pivot points doesn't help.
