Set-up: installed a 16V 86T engine in my 82 T 900 this past spring (original 8V T engine died). I kept the older CIS fuel delivery system and engine electronics because of convenience (didn't have time for a complete upgrade). At the time I advanced the timing a few degrees cuz I wanted some low end kick. Well, this Dec is smog test time for so last month I began the tune-up. I set the timing back to normal and cleaned the spark plugs. Around that time I also began driving with low octane fuel because I hated paying the higher price (2.60 for 91 here in CA), and the temps cooled, so I didn't fear hot temp knock. Then recently I changed the air filter, which needed it badly, and just yeterday I changed the oil and filter, and checked the spark plugs and timing one last time. To my surprise, the spark plugs were quite sooty, suggesting a too rich fuel setting, or possibly the result of a dirty air filter plus the use of low octane gas. When the timing was advanced and I used high octane, the spark plugs always revealed the normal burn temps and no sooty buildup. My question is: can the use of low octane gas create that much of a buildup of carbon? I'm thinking that and the dirty air filter, plus the lowered ignition timing setting all contributed. Perhaps I had the fuel air mix setting a bit rich to compensate for the advanced timing. So I reset the fuel air just in case. Any comments or experience with this related stuff?
