I think you're making a good choice. I'm a car dealer specializing in European and Japanese imports under $5K. While one might be tempted to think Japanese in terms of reliabilty and cheap to repair, the reality is that any car in that price range is going to need repairs on a regualr basis--Japanese cars aren't exactly cheap to fix either. In my experience they seem to have all the same things go wrong at that mileage/age that Saabs do--head gaskets, tranies, clutches etc. In addition serious rust will much more of a factor. There is a lot more demand for the Japanese cars so dollar for dollar you can get a lot more car in a Saab, not to mention the added safety and fun to drive factor. You get the most bang for your buck in the standard 900 (there's less demand for the "strippers")and the non turbo cars are much less likely to have been driven hard. Have a mechanic check any car you're considering--don't be afraid to pay top buck for a good one or buy a car that needs work as long as the price reflects fixing it and then some.
