I'm having difficulty troubleshooting the charging system on the 85 turbo.

Symptom:
The alternator charges normally (13.6-13.7 V) for about 10 minutes of driving. After that, the voltage is battery voltage, 11.6-12.0. No charging.

Indications:
The BATT light illuminates when key is turned to the ON position and goes out after the car starts.

The green and white wire at the D+ terminal on the alternator is clean and secure to the lug.

There is continuity (low resistance) between the alternator frame and engine ground. So i assume the ground wire from the alternator to the frame is sound.


The battery terminals are clean.

I just replaced the regulator thinking it might have been a premature failure (only 10K miles). I guess I was wrong!

Next step will be to disassemble and inspect the ground points at the radiator and the battery ground to the engine.

Any other ideas?
