Sounds like your fans didn't kick on. Check the fans by going to the switch on the top left side backside of the radiator....short the two wires and see if the fans come on. If the fans come on then they are functioning. Let the car idle and watch the temperature gauge to see how high the needle goes before the fans activate. If they don't come on before the temperature goes too hot, then the switch is bad...cheap fix. Another area that has driven me nuts is that the thermostat should be replaced after an overheat episode....wax in the thermostat leaked out and then it started to make the car run overly hot. If all this doesn't help, chances are you have a slow coolant leak that allowed the level to drop where the thermostat and fan switch were not in contact with the hot liquid.
