Check your spark plugs Posted by Ari [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: air mass meter - black smoke/idle, Jason, Tue, 30 Nov 2004 08:35:23 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
If you are running very rich, one cause could be the AMM. But it could also be burning oil (although that's usually blue).
If you're running that rich that the exhaust is black, it may be something more than the AMM - it could be a stuck injector.
No matter what, pull the spark plugs Are they all fluffy black? Is just one? If they are all fluffy black, then you're running rich. It could be the AMM, but then again, it could be a bad Fuel Pressure Regulator. If you have access to another known good AMM of the SAME PART number, swap it out and see if that helps. AMMs from different years/engines look pretty much the same, but there is a difference in the P/N, and they are not interchangeable.
If you're running very rich, you would have a poor idle. Again, it could be the AMM, but it could also be other things. The O2 sensor will impact this, but the O2 sensor has less control over the fuel flow than the AMM.
I'd do some troubleshooting before replacing a relatively expensive ($150 for a rebuilt) part like the AMM.
