Totally agree on large battery not being the issue. In addition to the heat shield issue, check that the ignition key doesn't stick in the start position.
If the lock cylinder hangs up or hung up in the past, the wire from the ignition switch to the solenoid will melt adjacent wires in the harness as well as connectors along the line.
It is not technically difficult, only tedious, to restore the harness and bypass melted connectors. I would not install a new harness, rather "jumper in" sections to replace only the bad wires. I spent a weekend restoring the wiring on an 85. If the car is clean otherwise, I'd say it's worth the time to fix. I would not have a shop do it...cost could run well over $1k.
Minor insulation deterioration is common and most is easy to fix.
