A lot depends on the rest of the car. How many miles are on it? If you did fix the transmission, could you get another three or four years out of the car? Are the engine, body and interior in good enough shape to continue driving it? The problem with dumping it is that you'll get next to nothing for it, then you have to come up with the money to buy another car. I know you can buy or lease a car with nothing down, but that's merely a convenient way to spend a lot more money. In other words if you can't afford to spend the $2,500. it would take to fix the transmission, how much sense does it make to spend $15 or $20K? There just aren't any alternatives that will put you in a drivable car that are cheaper than fixing your car. Are you going to buy a used car for $1,000? Your car has a long list of things that WON'T need to be repaired if you fix the trans.
