Lifters make a loud, metallic clicking sound. If your car has been sitting for awhile, it make take several minutes of engine running to pump them up with oil.

Timing chains make a rattling metallic sound. I think much of the chain sound comes from when the slack in the chain between the cam sprockets slaps against the bottom of the valve cover. There is a little rubber bumper inside the valve cover that the chain hits if it is slack. The bumper gets hard with age and doesn't dampen the noise. I cahnged the timing chain tensioner last summer. While in there, I also changed the rubber bumper. I was much harder than the new replacement part. There are also guides between the cam sprockets and the lower timing chain drive gear. Some of the noise might be from there.

A good way to isolate noises is to use a "poor man's stethescope"... a very long screwdriver. Touch the drive end of the screwdriver to the area you want to listen to on the engine. Put the handle in contact with your ear. The sound will transmit through the screwdriver quite readily. It allows you to pin point the location of noises under the hood. Works well for bearings, pumps, tappets etc.
