Sounds like you have a few different things going on Posted by RS [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Transmission or Clutch????, 85S900, Sun, 5 Dec 2004 12:50:52 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Often the reverse gear gets chewed up because drivers don't put it in another gear to stop the transmission internals from turning before putting it into reverse. The way the transmission is designed, there's only about 1/2 of the gear meshed, but there is a way to modify the transmission to use the rest of the gear engagement. See the link below.
If your driving habits include stopping the car, touching another gear to stop the internals from turning, then putting it in reverse, and it still grinds going into reverse, you have some other things going on:
- bad pilot bearing that keeps transmitting engine torque when the clutch pedal is in.
- air in the clutch hydraulics, so the clutch doesn't fully disengage
- bad clutch master and/or slave cylinder, so the clutch doesn't fully disengage.
