Results of remote door locks in '83 900 Posted by Saabpilot [Email] ![]() ![]() |
Wow, did this turn into a big project, but it's essentially done. I can now confirm that in 1983 and 1984 cars (possibly earlier, too) Saab located the power door lock system relay control inside the driver's door switch. What I ended up doing is removing that, replacing it with an actuator and getting a door lock control relay from a late model Saab 900 at a junkyard, then reverse-engineered a late model locking circuit using all of the existing wires in the car.
What was odd was that I had to swap the wire colors inside the driver's door...in other words I connected white/brown to blue and blue to white/brown while the wiring harness leading to the passenger's door and the hatch back connected like colors together. At first I had everything connected with like color wires and the driver's door did the opposite of the rest (locked while they unlocked and vica versa). But now everything is working fine. I installed the late model relay and the keyless remote controller inside the engine compartment. Turned out to be a fairly clean installation and all of the wires are connectorized so if the el-cheapo keyless system I bought ever dies I can drop another one in pretty easily.
Thanks to everyone who offered advice. By the way, no relays were used other than the OEM Saab lock control relay.
