undercarpet padding

What purpose does the under-carpet padding serve in a 1987 900TC? Can this padding be omitted safely?
See, hydraulic fluid (from the c-top) and water both soaked my rear floor's padding, probably for an unknown number of years, and now the padding is slimy and smells and doesn't seem to want to dry out even though it's been hanging over saw horses in front of a big gas heater for 8+ hours with the ambient room temperature being above 90F easy.
The water seems to have dried out but where the pad is discolored with hydraulic fluid I don't think it's ever going to dry.
If I just leave this padding stuff out of the car and put the carpet and seats back in without it, will I die or anything?
If the padding stuff is just noise insulation I don't really care, but if it's heat insulation that could be a problem. I don't want anybody burning their toes or anything.
This padding seems to be about a half inch or so of some kind of foam and then above that a thin layer of a vinyl/rubbery like material.
