and it does not go fully into first gear. I am not sure that the last series 5 spd is the same as earlier ones, but often 'popping' out of gear was related to a worn shift fork. Shift fork wear can be greatly increased by holding the shifter in gear. If this is the problem, often getting on and off the gas in that gear will make it pop out. 213K could also be ready for trans work related to other 'wear'. It's on the high end of good trans life. Sounds like a real 'take a chance' type car. If its in real nice condition and the price is right it might be worth a chance knowing it might need trans work soon.
