just happened to me ('87 900T). There's a chance that it is just a broken wire inside either connector that is shorting the signal to ground. If so, you might be able to reattach without complete disassembly of the distributor. The actual replacement receptacle (on the distributor) is only $5 or $10 at the dealer, but it's best to pull the distributor off to work on it. If you are lucky and it's the plug on the cable side, it's an easy fix. A dealer will charge 1 or 2 hrs labor if they have to take apart the distributor. A rebuild kit (new hall sensor, etc.) is $130 or so from site sponsors.
