both cars are not that far from the end of their lives. The BMW is a 93 325is with 206k miles. Great car, but it requires snow tires with at least 60% tread to prevent death. Seriously.

The battery is, indeed, special since it has a vent to keep the trunk from rusting/exploding. But I found a vented one at AutoZone for $64 last summer. There is really no good reason to spend the required $170 at the $tealer. It's just a battery!

I've driven the BMW through 3 Minnesota winters, and it is a very, very, very fun car to drive in snow (with 51/49% weight distribution, limited-slip diff and near-new snow tires).

But it's a coupe with frameless windows; as you open the door, the window rolls itself down about 1/2" out to clear the door gasket. Pretty cool except when the window is caked in ice, then it'll not only struggle to roll the window down, the glass will not clear the gasket.

The car also takes a very long time to warm up, the doors have to be slammed with amazing force when <0 deg F to close properly, and the valve tappets sound terrible on cold starts. (BMW recommends 15-40 or 20-50 oil year-round, and if I go any thinner, the variable valve timing gearset gets very noisy.) Ugh!

The fun factor is a lot lower with a FWD car, but that is compensated a little bit by the fun factor of the turbo.

Whoa, sorry for going on and on. I've had three Saabs and three BMWs, but the owners of Saabs are much nicer and far more knowledgeable than the other brand.
