interesting howling noise

Ever since I've had my 900T, the car I have heard a sort of subtle howling noise coming from the engine under accelleration. It sort of sounds like the wind howling when it's really windy outside. I never really thought of it as a bad noise, and the mechanic that checked the car before I purchased it test drove it, and I am certain that if he heard it, would know that it was a "bad" noise. I always thought it was the transmission making that noise, since my Father had previously had older American rides with less than quiet manual transmissions, that would make this very sound when they were accellerated...in fact it sounds just like the old 4 on the floor in Dad's old Plymouth Voltaire coupe.
That was until I was driving it the other day, and noticed that the noise seems to distinctly appear right when the boost gauge crosses into the yellow zone. I can in fact quite accurately make the noise appear by giving the car the right amount of gas to make it enter the boost zone. It also appears whenever it's dowshifted, but I have not been able to accurately pinpoint where on the boost gauge it will appear when downshifted.
My thinking is that the sound is coming from the turbo. It doesn't seem to be anything to worry about, but I was just curious what could make a noise like that....the air blowing through the intercooler?, or maybe it's just noise the intake manifold makes as the air gets split up across the runners.
