There are a couple of things that can break:
The ignition lock cylinder can break and the switch can go bad. If you aren't getting any resistance, then the cylinder has broken.
The ignition cylinder is aluminum. It has a narrow spot right above where it engages the gearset that turns the actual switch. That narrow spot tends to break. I had it happen to my '88 900S a few years back. Replacing the lock cylinder involves removing the driver's seat, removing the console, and knocking out a small aluminum plug on the side of the shifter assembly to remove the lock cylinder.
Here's a link to a scan from the Manual. The picture on the bottom of the page is the one to pay attention to to locate that aluminum plug I mentioned above. You don't have to remove the shifter assembly (and mess with the 3-sided nuts, etc.)

I got a new cylinder from the dealer to match the old one. That was around $50 8 years ago.
Now, if you do get resistance when you turn the key, it might be that the switch is bad. That's more involved because you have to remove the shifter assembly and take it apart. That's a royal pain.
