Split-second hard pull to the left...(longish)

Today, on the last half of a 150 mile road trip, all highway, my '85 900S would pull left occationally. It's bad enough to make you think it's going to toss you in the other lane. An example, driving along a straight section, at 60 mph, all of a sudden I'll get a "jerk, jerk, JERK" to the left. sometimes it'll just pulse lightly with a very slight pull. I stopped of course to check the tires and anything I could make myself look at in 11 degree weather. All was fine, tire pressures where they were supposed to be, no bulges, nothing appeared to be bent. I felt all the wheels (alloy) to see if any were hot or even warm, hoping to indicate a hanging caliper or a failing wheel bearing, but they were evenly cold. I will say that I've known my steering rack was on it's way out with the occational lack of power assist. When it jerks, it DOES feel like a loss of assist, but it pulls hard to the left if only in split second increments. Anyone have this symptom or know what's causing it? This is my only car right now, and I don't want it tossing me in front of a Semi.
