If you haven't already, search the General Board for "Hakka" and "Gislaved". Also, check out greendiamondtire.com -- this company re-molds used tire carcasses with a new snow tire tread that contains embedded carbide bits that provide exceptional grip. From reading over their site, as well as links to reputable sources (e.g., a Washington State DOT report), the technology makes sense and the performance claims are credible. There are some comments on the Green Diamond tire on the General Board, too. East of Sweden (Saabnet sponsor??) sells them...
I might also try http://www.icerace.com and look through their forum -- some ice racing classes run on non-studded tires; my guess is that these guys will know what works best, at least for ice (perhaps not for deep snow).
I might also try http://www.specialstage.com, which is a rally racing site. Navigate to their forum, then to the "Car Construction" section, and search it. Those rally nutjobs ;-) race in winter and are also keen on knowing what works best.
