Final results - adding engine guages to '83T (long) Posted by Saabpilot [Email] ![]() ![]() |
Wow, this was fun. I just finished adding 3 Cyberdyne digital gauges to my '83 900T, as well as LED lights inside the console, controlled by a switch so I can actually see inside there at night. I also finished up the odds and ends of my keyless remote system project, which consisted of adding an inside switch for the power locks, interfacing the dome light circuit and interfacing the 4-way flashers. What a neat improvement it is to have that system up and running.
But let me tell you I finally found out the true sizes of the oil pressure sender fitting for this model year. Thanks to all of you with suggestions a few days back. For the record in case anyone else wants to go through this on an '83 vintage 8 valve engine, the oil pressure sender threads are a straight 14mm thread. I say straight because there is one prominent SAAB vendor who advertises on their web site a tapered 14mm adapter as being necessary. Well, I bought one. I had this tapered fitting installed then a regular 14mm fitting then the adapter from 14 mm to the 1/8" generic threads on the VDO sender. At the same time I did this the car was due for an oil change so I went ahead and did it this afternoon. In years of changing oil I have never had a leak...until today.
Let me tell you I had to go buy two bags of oil dry tonight! I thought all was well and good when I was test running the engine out in the driveway until I walked back into the garage, then looked at the car and something in my mind said "gee, should there be a massive puddle of oil under the car and why is it pouring down out of the engine compartment?"
To make a short story even longer, that *^%^%&% tapered adapter was so wrong that it was just letting the pressurized oil pour right out through the threads. It took me a bit to figure this out, as at first I thought I had a bad seal on the oil filter and I replaced it (I use SAAB OEM filters). After getting out the wrenches and working in that tight space I removed that *(^&*&^*^% tapered adapter and reinstalled everything else and all is well. Thankfully it warmed up to 40 degrees F from the 19 degrees F it had been earlier! So other than the fact that I have massive amounts of oil in my engine compartment that I couldn't reach with a rag, all is well. But the oil dry industry should be happy as I am keeping them in business!
My only remaining question is that because I could nowhere on this earth locate a 14mm "T" fitting, my oil idiot light wire is just hanging there. Anyone think I can attach this on the same terminal as the new pressure sensor without screwing up either of them?
