As an owner of an automatic with 187,000 miles on it, I can say that while they do have some problems, I don't believe they are any greater than the problems that manuals have. Just read all the posts about problems people have with manuals/rebuilds/clutch replacement. The automatics accelerate well and are quite comfortable to drive on the highway. Do the flush as Dick suggested. Simply draining and filling back up will not do the trick, you must do this several times. You might consider a front band adjustment too. I think you will find it will have a big difference. If it doesn't, many people have driven without second gear for many years. That being said, my next 900 will be a manual...I bought this one as my wife insisted on it, she cannot drive a manual. It's about time she learned!
