I never actually thought of that. It makes sense, though. I watched three phenomenal mom+pop auto stores go down the drain in my town...giving way to AutoZone and Pep Boys. What do we have in turn? A void of rare parts, a void of used parts, and a void of personal service. My grandfather knew the owner of the parts store/auto shop- the guy would often get me used parts if he thought the new was too expensive. He actually found a set of 9000turbo shop manuals for me (which I never bought for 40 bucks...now kicking myself in the pants) and was always keeping his eye out for performance parts.
Now, I go into AutoZone, they pull up my record on the computer, and repeat the automated messages- "are you due for an oil change," or whatever info. they've weaned from their records of past purchases.
Support the local focal, kids.
