This is what I get when I tried. So now you are forcing me to rely on my memory and enigneering knowledge. I thought that the solenoid was replacing the internal solenoid of the starter but from what you are saying, it obviously doesn't. I haven't had this problem with my 85 turbo but used to with my Porsche 914. The problem was that the voltage drop in the starter circuit was so high that the starter solenoid would not pull in. By putting the Ford solenoid in, you are using the Saab starter circuit to pull in the Ford solenoid and using a more direct route from the battery through the Fjord solenoid. Assuming this is correct, then #12 wire is adequate. However, you still need to check the battery connections.
There is a simple test you can do to see if installing the solenoid will help your specific problem. Take a piece of #12 or #14 wire from the starter on the spade terminal where the wire from the key switch connects. Take this over to the battery and touch it to the positive terminal. USE CAUTION as the engine may turn over and the car start. If in deed the engines turns over, you will benefit from using a Ford solenoid as a relay.
