I wouldn't be so quick to assume core is bad. I had similar symptoms on my '88 900S, it turned out to be a bad heater valve. Search this BB for "heater valve" and you'll find that the place is fairly littered with stories just like yours and whose happy endings involve replacement of the valve. Furthermore, one our most esteemed contributors, Anders (aka Swedecar) has posted that in all of his many years of experence working on Saabs he has yet to see a heater core at fault.
There is an easy test for flow through the core, though. Unhook heater hoses at firewall, get a section of garden hose or equiv and try blowing into the nipples of the heater valve (this isn't nearly a exciting as that sounds). Try it with heater valve on full hot (expect lots of coolant out the other nipple, should flow pretty freely) and again with control set to cold (expect no coolant flow or just a drop or two).
Search the board for my posts some months agoo, I got alot of good advise and learned tons in the course of fixing it and if I can do it pretty much everyone can, too. Stay warm, have a happy holiday!
