If you hadn't replaced 2 alternators, I would have guessed that a diode or two was burned out in the alternator. There's a bunch of them in there and when some go bad you need to rev the engine to get the alternator light to go out and the voltage to kick up. I am not convinced that all rebuilt alternators have every diode working, and suspect that they just get new bushings/bearings and a regulator.
But if the alternators are all good, then you might have the wrong bulb in the charging circuit. It's not the same wattage as the other dash bulbs, unfortunately I can't remember what it is. Might be in Bentley or on the Townsend site.
