First pull the APC solenoid plug, up near the coil. This will limit you to base boost. Take a test drive and the boost should go into yellow and stop at a steady boost level. If the problem went away at base boost, check turbo plumbing and also the connection to the APC computer on the fender well. A loose connection here can cause mysterious problems. Open APC box and look for signs of corrosion at any of the contacts to the printed circuit board. Clean/resolder. Also check operation of APC solenoid...clicks at ignition on and opens and closes hose ports when on and off.
If, even at base boost, the problem persists, I would check some basic tune-up items.
- Check that the hooter/BPV valve(down near turbo) holds vacuum and pressure when you suck/blow on the hose that feeds it from the intake.
- Check for any loose turbo plumbing hoses or loose vacuum lines.
- Next check dist. rotor resistance between tip and center contact. Should be 1000 ohms, if zero ohms, it's burned through...replace.
- Regap plugs to 0.024", NGK7es or NGK7ev plugs are best.
- Unbolt knock sensor(under intake runners on head) and wrap in a towel. If problem goes away, replace knock sensor.
- Last thing I can think of, you might have a bad AMM, especially if you get surging and flat spots as you accelerate.
