That sympton usually indicates a leaking of coolant into the oil of the motor. Makes Mayo-colored, very slick (oily) mixture. Not good! Sounds like a head-gasket problem? Ugh!
I'm not much of a mechanic, but I don't think changing the valve cover/valve cover gasket would have to do with that symptom (unless there was "bolt-substitution" that caused damage). Bentley manual doesn't indicate that any of the valve cover bolts need to be sealed.
